Nigeria’s passport has dropped to 90th place in the Henley Passport Index

Although Nigeria’s passport has dropped to 90th place in the latest Henley Passport Index, holders can still access 44 destinations without obtaining a visa before departure.

The July 2026 edition of the global ranking, released by Henley & Partners on Tuesday, assigned the Nigerian passport a visa-free score of 44.

The ranking means Nigerian citizens can access 44 destinations through visa-free entry, visa on arrival or an electronic visa (e-visa), depending on each country’s immigration requirements.

Nigeria placed 90th in the latest global ranking, dropping one spot from 89th in the April 2026 edition, although its visa-free access score remained unchanged at 44.

The Henley Passport Index ranks 199 passports according to the number of destinations their holders can visit without obtaining a visa in advance. The ranking is based on data provided by the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

Despite the slight decline, Nigeria has recorded steady progress over the years, rising from 94th place in 2025 and 103rd in 2021.
